History of Etawah City

Etawah city is a well-known historic city present in Uttar Pradesh. It is also an administrative headquarter of Etawah district. This city is flanked by Yamuna River along with Chambal River and has witnessed various important historic events from medieval period to post independence.

Some of the major events of history that are associated with Etawah are:

Medieval period:

In 1193 after the decline of Kanauj and Delhi, Muslim rulers incorporated Etawah in their territory. However, they ruled uninterrupted till the end of century, yet Muslim rule in Etawah faced Maratha invasion for short period within their rule in Etawah. Indeed, during this period other communities also aroused in Etawah like the Rajputs, the Sengars, the Bhadaurias, the Dhakras and the Chauhans. During this period, Hindus started settling in Etawah and nearby area in pattern they are found today. During this period; however, some disturbance related to tax arouse in Nasir-ud-din Muhammad Shah’s rule, yet these issues were put to end by Tomar ruler of Gwalior in 1390.

Mughal Rule in Etawah:

Even in later periods of Indian history, Etawah was associated with various important historical events like Jaunpur Campaign, reigns of eminent rulers like Bahlol Lodhi, Ibrahim Lodhi, Babur, Humayun and Akbar. After this, Etawah district undergone major changes during reign of Rohillas and Oudh Government. Indeed, Saadat Ali Khan who was Nawab of Oudh; handed over the district of Etawah to British sovereignty. Subsequently, during Revolt of 1857 a atmosphere of agitation prevailed through this region along with other northern regions.

Revolt of 1857 in Etawah:

During revolt of 1857 against British rule in India, from June 1857 to December 1857, freedom fighter carried out their operations from Etawah but in 1858 British government got its dominance back.

Post-Independence

After Independence of India till January, 1974, 548 freedom fighters were awarded Tamra Patras, i.e. copper plates containing a record of the services rendered by them or their forebears. This is a number which any district can boast of without exaggerating its role.

Since then the District Administration is normal and the socio-economic environment remained as usual except minor ups and downs.
